RAILING SYSTEM SPECIFICATIONS
PRODUCT
DESCRIPTION
A versatile engineered aluminum railing system, designed for
commercial and residential applications. The system accommodates pickets (balusters) or
glass for railing, and fence systems. Components are versatile and interchangeable
allowing unique arrangements to be created to suit any condition or architectural
requirement. The system is strong, lightweight, and maintenance free. The aluminum
components have a durable powder coat finish, are saltwater resistant, and available in a
wide choice of standard and custom colors. Western Railco Products component railing
systems are fabricated and tested to meet Uniform, BOCA, and National Building Code of
Canada requirements.
PART
1 GENERAL
1.1 WORK INCLUDED:
Provide engineered aluminum ornamental component railing
system of the following type:
Special Note: Choose applicable system from the following:
- Picket Insert Panel System
- Glass Insert Panel System
- Welded Picket System
1.2 REFERENCE STANDARDS:
- Uniform Building Code 1997 - Section 509, Table 16-B
"Guardrails"
- BOCA National Building Code 1993 - Sections 1615.8.2 "Guard
Designs and Construction" and 1615.8.2.1 "Infill Areas"
- National Building Code of Canada 1995 - Section 4.1.10.1 "Loads
on Guards"
- Canadian Government Specifications Board (CGSB) CAN2-12.1 M90 -
Tempered or Laminated Safety Glass
- ANSI Z97.1 - 1984 (R1994) - Glazing Materials Used in Buildings,
Safety Performance Specifications and Methods of Test
1.3 SUBMITTALS:
- Provide shop drawings and product data under provisions of Section
(01300)
- Within thirty calendar days after the contractor has received the
owners notice to proceed, submit shop drawings that indicate scope of project,
component details, materials, finish, fasteners and anchorage methods, and the
relationship to adjoining work
- Shop Drawings shall be signed and sealed by the professional engineer
responsible for the design
1.4 QUALITY ASSURANCE:
- Railing systems are based upon the Western Railco Products Ltd.
component railing and fencing system as the standard of quality. No substitutions will be
accepted.
- Design criteria: railing assemblies (including top rail, bottom rail,
pickets, post, and connections) shall be designed to conform with all applicable building
codes and loading requirements.
- Galvanic Action: Prevent galvanic action and other forms of corrosion
by insulating metals from direct contact with incompatible material.
1.5 WARRANTY:
- 25 year warranty covering powder coating and structural defects (See
manufacturer's warranty statement for specific details)
1.6 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING:
- Deliver materials to the job site in good condition and store in
clean, dry location, properly protected against damage to finished surfaces
- Store away from uncured concrete, masonry, or stucco
PART 2 PRODUCTS
2.1 MATERIALS:
- Extrusion Alloy: 6060-T51 / 6063-T5 or 6063-T54
- Screws, anchors and inserts: corrosion resistant Cadmium Plated Steel
or Stainless Steel
- Glass panels: tempered or laminated glass:
- Clear
- Tinted as specified
- ? inch ANSIZ97.1-1975
- 5mm CAN2-12.1 M90
2.2 FINISHES:
- TGIC polyester powder coating, electro-statically applied to 2-3 mil
thickness. Color to be selected by the architect from manufacturer's standard colors
2.3 RAILING COMPONENTS:
- Top Rails:
- Round: size 2 inches (51 mm) high x 2 1/4 inches (57 mm) wide
- Square: size 2 inches (51 mm) high x 2 inches (51 mm) wide
- Posts: size 1 5/8 inches (41 mm) x 1 5/8 inches (41 mm)
- Pickets, square tubes:
- 5/8 inches (16 mm)
- 3/4 inches (19 mm)
- Bottom Rail:
- Deep H profile, size 2 1/8 inches (54 mm) high x 1 inch (25 mm) wide
- Welded picket bottom rail profile
- Accessories:
- Support bracing as recommended by manufacturer
- Base plates, wall mounts, sleeves, and end clips, flat bar aluminum
- Glass inserts: Extruded vinyl, glazing gaskets, color to be, White,
Beige, Black or Grey.
2.4 FABRICATION:
- Fabricate railing assembly to design dimensions, details, and
specified requirements for structural performance. Fabricate members and fittings to
provide flush, smooth, rigid hairline joints
- Pre-assemble items in shop to greatest extent possible to minimize
field splicing and assembly
- Disassemble only as required for shipping. Clearly identify each unit
for installation
- Fasteners and welds to be concealed as much as design will allow
- Connect non-welded members using manufacturer's standard concealed
fasteners and fittings unless noted otherwise
- Close exposed ends of railing members with manufacturer's standard
end fittings
- Picket and post spacing to be set in accordance with applicable
building codes
- Provide manufacturer's standard brackets, fittings, flanges, and
anchors for connection to other work unless otherwise noted
- Provide inserts and anchors for connecting guardrail system to
support structure in accordance with all applicable codes
- General contractor to verify dimensions on site prior to fabrication
PART 3
EXECUTION
3.1 INSTALLATION:
- Install work in accordance with final shop drawings and
manufacturer's instructions
- Erect work plumb, square and level, free from distortion or defects
detrimental to appearance or performance
- Anchor posts to substrate with approved corrosion resistant fasteners
- Fasten top rail sleeves and top rail to posts
- Insert pickets (balusters) or glass panels into bottom and top rail
in accordance with the drawings
3.2 CLEANING:
Wash railing using clean water and soap, rinse with water
Do not use acid solution, steel wool, or other harsh abrasives
Clean glass panels by removing dust and grit with generous
application of water, and remove grease and film deposits with mild solution of soap and
water; and rinse thoroughly
